Department of English

 

About the Department: 

• The department was established in the year 1978 with the inception of the college
• Along with Bachelor of Arts in English, the department has introduced UGC recognized Add on Course ‘Functional English’ since 1998
• Department also runs UGC sponsored ‘A Certificate Course in Spoken English’
• It is one of the seven departments that offer Functional English Course in the jurisdiction of the Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune
• The department has successfully organized Two national level seminars on “Oral Traditions and Literature and Film Adaptations of Literary Texts: A Perspective respectively on 2013 and 2014
• ICT enabled classroom and well equipped language laboratory with Orell Digital Language Laboratory Software are the special features of the department

Achievements:

• Mr Ravindra Gomaji Vaidya has completed his Doctoral research on “Depiction of Tribal Culture: A Critical Analysis of the Select Movies in English”
• Two of the Faculty members Mr S.Z.Thombe and Mr H.R. Gaikwad are pursuing their doctoral degree
• Two of the faculty members Mr Rahul Take and Mr. Ramdas Korde have qualified National Eligibility Test (NET) and State Eligibility Test (SET) Examinations
• Dr R. G. Vaidya has been working on BCUD, SPPU, Pune Sponsored Minor Research Project entitled “Tribal Culture in Indian English Fiction: A Critical Survey
• Departmental alumni Mr Vijay Sabale (physically challenged student) has secured the post of Assistant Sales Tax Inspector.
• Almost 90% student of the previous batch are pursuing higher degree in SPPU, Pune
• Departmental Students have participated in Zonal level Avishkar Research Competition

 

Departmental Activities:

• Audio Visual Sessions: the literary adaptations of the text prescribed for the syllabus as well as related subjects are screened frequently in the department
• Mock interview, group discussions are regular activities in the department
• Students are assigned to carry out in house projects on Entrepreneurship Development
• Department celebrates “Literary Week” every year, under which various competitions viz. elocution, debate, storytelling, news and advertisement, Drama and cultural are organized
•  Under functional course the department organizes Study tour to places like Radio Station and T.V. stations

Research:

• Dr. Ravindra G. Vaidya has been working on Film studies and Literary Criticism as major areas of his research
• Mr. Sonaji Thombe pursue Biblical Studies as his area of research
• Mr. Hemant Gaikwad has been working on Indian Writing in English as his area of interest
• Mr R.S.Take works on Literary Theory and Criticism whereas Mr. Ramdas B. Korde work on Poetry as his area of research

Departmental Research Activity:

• Department collectively trying to devise research module that would enable rural students to learn English as a Second language without being afraid of it.
